Nortel Networks Joins New "XENPAK" 10
Gigabit Ethernet Transceiver Multisource Agreement As
Charter Member
New
Standard to Ease Network Integration, Provide New Levels of
Performance
FOR RELEASE MONDAY MAY 21, 2001
PALO ALTO, Calif. - The new XENPAK 10 Gigabit Ethernet
multi-source agreement (MSA) group today announced that
Nortel Networks has joined the MSA, a further indication of
widespread industry support for the new specification.
The XENPAK MSA
supports the proposed 802.3ae IEEE 10 Gigabit Ethernet
standard, and specifies a uniform form factor, size,
connector type and electrical pin-outs. The new standard
will ease next-generation network integration, while
providing new levels of performance. Products based on the
XENPAK MSA are expected to ship later this year.
“With this
announcement, Nortel Networks is continuing to leverage its
Optical Ethernet capabilities that provide customers greater
efficiencies, lower costs and simpler metropolitan
networks,” said Patrick Walsh, vice president, Optical
Component Solutions, Nortel Networks. “By working in
conjunction with other manufacturers, we can help ensure
that an efficient, interoperable solution is available to
the market much more quickly and cost-effectively.”
“This is a
clear validation of the XENPAK approach to 10 Gigabit
Ethernet,” said Euan Livingston, marketing manager for
Agilent’s Fiber Optic Business Unit. “We expect the
stature and scope of the XENPAK supporters to expedite
market adoption of this exciting new technology.”
The MSA covers
all four transceiver types defined in the proposed standard,
including 850 nanometers (nm) serial, 1310 nm serial, 1310
nm WWDM and 1550 nm serial. XENPAK transceivers are very compact, allowing eight devices
to be mounted on typical line cards, but do not compromise
on the significant thermal and EMI management requirements
of 10 gigabit optical electronics.
The XENPAK MSA
group is an open forum, welcoming both transceiver and
network equipment manufacturers as new members. The group continues to receive high levels of
interest, and expects additional companies to join in the
near future. For
