Seven Companies Join XENPAK 10 Gigabit Ethernet
Transceiver Multi-Source Agreement
XENPAK MSA group now numbers 15, specifications published at

FOR RELEASE MONDAY MAY 29, 2001
PALO ALTO, Calif. and Allentown, Pa. - The XENPAK 10 Gigabit Ethernet transceiver multi-source agreement
(MSA) group today announced that a total of 15 companies have announced support for the
MSA.
The latest companies to show their support for this emerging specification include Blaze Networks,
Infineon, Lightlogic (recently acquired by Intel Corp.),
Luminent, Molex, Picolight, and OpNext. These new member companies join Agere Systems, Agilent Technologies, IBM,
Mitsubishi Electric, Nortel Networks, Optillion, Pine
Photonics, and Tyco Electronics as XENPAK supporters. The group also announced that the technical specifications
for the MSA are now available on the group's website at http://www.xenpak.org.
The XENPAK MSA, announced in March 2001 by Agere and Agilent, defines and specifies a uniform form factor, size, connector type and electrical pin-out for 10
Gigabit Ethernet transceivers as defined by the proposed IEEE 802.3ae standard. All 15 companies will independently develop and market 10 Gigabit Ethernet
transceivers based on the proposed IEEE standard and this MSA. Products based on the XENPAK MSA are expected to begin shipments this year.
"Only two months after announcing this MSA, we now count some of the most influential players in the optical component business as members," said Mike
Peppler, strategic marketing manager at Agere Systems. "The XENPAK design clearly addresses the performance and interoperability requirements of next-generation
networks."
The MSA covers all seven transceiver types defined in the proposed IEEE 802.3ae standard. XENPAK transceivers are very compact, allowing eight devices to be
mounted on a typical line card without compromising the significant thermal and EMI management requirements of 10 gigabit-per-second optical electronics.
"Such overwhelming support for a multi-source agreement is rare," said Euan Livingston, marketing manager for Agilent's Fiber Optic Business Unit. "The rapid
acceptance we have seen from the industry for XENPAK confirms that this MSA will help drive cost-effective, flexible 10 gigabit solutions to market quickly."
